Sunday Post – Hugo Nominees and Thoughts

Welcome back to Back Shelf Books for another Sunday Post!

How is it already April?? It feels like it was just January! I can’t believe we’re a quarter of the way through the year already.

The 2024 Hugo Award nominees were announced this past week. While I’m extremely disappointed in what happened with the 2023 Hugos, I’m also willing to give the Glasgow Worldcon a chance this year. As a 2024 Hugo voter, I’ll be looking into all the nominees in all the categories, so lots of reviews will be forthcoming. Have you read any of the nominees? I’m probably most excited to read Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher, Starter Villain by John Scalzi, and Liberty’s Daughter by Naomi Kritzer. I also can’t wait to watch the movie and tv show nominees!

As always, I’m linking up today’s post with Readerbuzz for The Sunday Salon, Reading Reality for Stacking the Shelves, and The Caffeinated Reviewer for The Sunday Post.

Upcoming Posts & Reviews

I’m excited for this week! Several of these reviews are already scheduled, so I’m excited to remember my thoughts on them all over again. We’ll also *finally* have another novella review on the blog with Nghi Vo’s The Brides of High Hill!

What I Read This Week

It was a FULL week of books. Reviews for several of these were listed above. Romancing Mister Bridgerton was a reread, and I enjoyed it more that I remembered from my first read! A Fall from Grace by Jennie Goutet was an accidental reread, actually. Have you ever gotten halfway through a book and realized, “Wait, I’ve totally read this. I know this book.” It wasn’t in my Goodreads read list, but I had definitely read it before. 🤷🏼

Currently Reading

I’m trying my best to finish up Catchpenny by Charlie Huston. I’m moving slowly, but enjoying my time with it. I also just picked up Otherworldly by F.T. Lukens (which just released!) and I like the writing so far.

Stacking the Shelves

I picked up quite a few ARCs this week, mostly of dark sf/f/h books coming out this fall. I’m hoping I will be in the mood for dark reads in late Summer/early Fall! Foul Days by Genoveva Dimova is the exception, as it releases on June 25, 2024. It sounds absolutely fantastic and I just couldn’t pass it up!

Weekly Goal & Final Thoughts

What did you read this week? Any good recommendations?

I hope you all have a great reading week!

  1. I have contemplated rereading Romancing Mr Bridgerton but am not sure I will have time before the TV show although I expect there will be a few variations.

    Have a great reading week.

  2. I love T. Kingfisher, so I’m excited to read that one for sure. Have a great week!

  3. Glass Houses sounds interesting to me. I hope you have a wonderful week, Hannah!

  4. I hope that you enjoy reading all your books.

I am currently reading An Offer From A Gentleman by Julia Quinn. I wanted to catch up before the Netflix series then realised that the third series isn’t based on the third book 😂 I couldn’t bring myself to skip books so I still don’t know if I will read the corresponding book 😂

    Have a great week!

  5. Thank you for providing the link for the Hugo nominees – I’ve read three of the nominated novels and my favourite by far is Emily Tesh’s Some Desperate Glory which blew me away. Though I also enjoyed Starter Villain and Witch King.

I’ve only completed 2 of the series – Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Architecture series and Charles Stross’s Laundry series, which is my favourite of the two. But then it ran to 10 books, I think? Whereas Tchaikovsky’s was only a trilogy. I also enjoyed Thornhedge and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

You have some interesting reads this week, have a lovely reading week:)).

  6. Thanks for the link to the Hugo nominations, I will say that I loved the nominated episode from The Last of Us. The new T. Kingfisher book sounds great based on the back blurb. Have a great week!

  7. Thornhedge and Starter Villain are both really good, enjoy! And thank you for putting Model Home on my radar, I hadn’t heard about it and now I’m anxious to check it out!

  8. I do love John Scalzi, but still need to read/listen to Starter Villain. I also love F.T. Lukens’ books usually, but Otherworldly, while good, wasn’t as good for me as the other books I’ve read by them. You got a lot of stuff read, I need to get over here and check out your reviews! Have a great week!

  9. I’ll be interested to see what you think of the Worldcon titles you mentioned. I’m still debating Foul Days. I want it but June is a mountain of books already.

  10. Oh, what, there’s a new Ann Leckie and I didn’t know?! I’m going to have to get my hands on that.

I really need to actually round to reading some of Lukens’ work… I always love the covers and the sound of the stories, but I haven’t read one yet!

    My weekly roundup.

  11. I’m going to check out the Hugo list to see if there’s any books there that I’ve read. I hope you have a great week ahead!

    1. I’m a huge fan of Scalzi, so I’m hoping I love that one!

  15. I used to always eagerly await the Hugo nominees list, but I’ve gotten away from science fiction—I’d really like to get back to it. I’d especially love to see a list of must-read science fiction books from the last ten years or so.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the Hugo nominees.

    1. I’m now determined to put this list out, Deb! Such a great idea!
