The Sunday Post: Reviewing the Week and Looking Ahead – 2/25/2024

Welcome back to Back Shelf Books for another Sunday Post!

How the heck is February almost over?? The winter has completely flown by. My daffodils popped up this week like it was no big deal. I’m not sure who told them it’s Spring, but I have a feeling they know better than me. I still have a few books I’d like to get through before March, but I’m pretty happy with how many books I read the past two months!

As always, I’m linking up with Readerbuzz for The Sunday Salon, Reading Reality for Stacking the Shelves, and The Caffeinated Reviewer for The Sunday Post.

Upcoming Posts & Reviews

Next week I’ll have reviews up for The Mushroom Knight by Oliver Bly, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Everyone on this Train is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson, I Feel Awful, Thanks by Lara Pickle, and These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart by Izzy Wasserstein. These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart is such a fantastic read and I’ve been dying to share my review on it for months now!

What I Read This Week

I didn’t have too big of a reading week this week. I read One of Our Kind by Nicola Yoon and Cursed Cruise by Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren (reviews coming soon!!).

Currently Reading

I’m taking my time with Sea of Tranquility and Everyone on this Train is a Suspect, but should finish them this week! I also picked up Wolfpitch by Balazs Lorinczi, and I am really digging the colors and art.

Stacking the Shelves

I got a medium-sized stack of books this week! There are definitely dark themes going on in this group, which I’m not mad about.

For Review:

It Came from the Trees by Ally Russel

A Haunted Girl by Ethan Sacks and Noami Sacks

Storm: Dawn of a Goddess by Tiffany D. Jackson

The Cull, Vol. 1 by Kelly Thompson

Don’t Let the Forest In by CG Drews

Society of Lies by Lauren Ling Brown

Like Happiness by Ursula Villarreal-Moura

Purchased:

The Last Yakuza by Jake Adelstein (Audio)

Weekly Goal & Final Thoughts

I’m hoping to get through a few more reads and reviews this week! I’m hoping to tick that ever-dreaded Netgalley percentage just a littttle bit higher before March!

Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to drop your Sunday Post link in the comments below!

    1. So fast!! Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Right, January felt soo slow but February has just breezed past! Also glad to see you loved The Warm Hands of Ghosts! I loved Katherina Arden’s Bear and the Nightingale trilogy but haven’t gotten my hands on this one yet. I hope you continue to have a good reading time 🙂

    1. February flew by!! Hopefully March feels a little slower!

      1. I hope so. My days just vanish! I know that February is a shorter month but only by a day this year 😂

      2. I kept thinking that it would be a super short month, but nope! 😂

  • Yes – the daffodils are making an appearance here, too. And the blackthorn, I just wish it would stop raining so much. I hope the coming week is a good one, Hannah:).

    1. I had to look up blackthorns! I’d never heard of those. Our wild blackberry bushes are starting to grow though! Happy reading this week 🙂

      1. Blackthorn blossom is beautiful – especially against the black wood. The only snag is that they also have wicked thorns, but in the autumn there are lovely berries for the birds:).

      2. Oh man, that sounds gorgeous. I’ll have to do some digging around and see if there’s any near me! Thanks so much for the info!

      3. It is the loveliest shrub and grows freely in our hedgerows all around here.

  • I’m looking forward to your review of Sea of Tranquility. It’s on my radar, but not one that is very high on my list, yet.

    1. I’m excited to get finished with it and the review! Station Eleven is one of my all-time favorites!

  • We don’t have any flowers yet, but winter is going really fast. I hate summer, so I’m not very excited about that!

    1. Honestly, same! It gets miserably hot here in the summer.

  • I Feel Awful, Thanks sounds like it is very promising. I look forward to hearing more about it.

Spring is here along the Texas Gulf Coast. I can almost see the new leaves growing on the plants!

    1. I think you would love I Feel Awful, Thanks!! It’s such an adorable YA translated graphic novel. I really enjoyed it.

  • I am so ready for spring, so happy that your daffodils are blossoming!
I am very curious about the new Nicola Yoon book. I loved her YA novels. 🙂
I hope you have a lovely week!

    1. It’s my first Yoon book but I enjoyed it a lot! Fingers crossed Spring actually pops around the corner soon!

  • yes we are getting peeks of spring growth. You had some amazing reads. I think there were a large number of releases in February and some really awesome ones.

    1. February was a HUGE month for new releases. Thankfully my March arc list is much smaller. I’m excited to get back to library and backlist reads.

  • i been working on trying to move my netgalley precentage as well. I started at 71 percent in january and got it to 72 and then this month i managed another pecent so at 73 whoop. Why does it seem like it pulling teeth to get it to move haha. I pretty sure the groundhog sayinig early sping is what is confusing. your flowers, heck my roses were in bloom for a long time even as we dipped into winter i was like ya need to hibernate it winter. Hope your enjoy your upcoming reads.

    1. It takes sooo long to move the percentage up even a tiny bit! Good luck with yours! I haven’t even checked on my rose bush! Goodness. She’s probably trying to bloom too.

  • I love that cover of Cursed Cruise! Although I hope Spring has come early, I’m braced for a winter surprise. Here’s my SP: https://bonniereadsandwrites.com/2024/02/25/sunday-post-recharging/

    1. Cursed Cruise is a ton of fun! A great YA thriller friendship romp. And, yes, I’m totally thinking we’ll get another frost. Ugh. Have a great reading week!

  • It is crazy that February’s almost over, but I’m glad, lol. I need spring. I hope it lasts a while and summer isn’t here before we know it. I hate short springs and falls, lol.

    1. We have practically no Spring or Fall here. Just extremely long Summers and Winters. It’s such a bummer. I wish I had good Springs and Falls!

  • What do you mean February is almost over? You must be mistaken! How does time fly so quickly?! To be fair, I do wish spring was here already, but I just feel like the months are going by too quickly and I have barely gotten any of my new year goals started! I hope you have a great week ahead!

    1. We cannot already be through two months of 2024. I refuse to believe it. 😳

  • I just got book one of Steveson’s book on audio. Excited to try this series. I was 78 today…we broke records dating back to the 1800s.

    1. I realllyy wanted to love it. I think I would have liked the audio more!

    1. It’s such a good read! The perfect level of thriller/horror for a YA read!
