The Sunday Post: Reviewing the Week and Looking Ahead – 1/28/2024

Welcome back to Back Shelf Books!

We finally lost all our snow this week! In its place, though, we got a heck ton of rain. Rain, I can handle. It’s been a much more normal week this week, and normal is perfectly good in my book.

News & Fun

I’m super excited to now be volunteering with Strong Women, Strange Worlds, a group of women and non-binary authors who write speculative fiction. They hold completely free reading events twice a month, where authors read a small selection from their works. Authors from around the world and in a ton of different sub-genres read their books, and the authors differ each event. Our next event is held on February 2nd, if you’re interested!!

What I Read This Week

I had some disappointing reads this week and even DNFed a few books. My philosophy when it comes to books is that life is too short to read bad books. Even more than that, life is too short to read books that you just don’t enjoy. Instead of focusing on those, here are the highlights of my reading week!

I finished all these this week except The Tainted Cup, but I should finish it before the end of the weekend!

  1. First Test Graphic Novel by Tamora Pierce
  2. The White Slipper by Brittany Fichter
  3. Sentient by Jeff Lemiere
  4. The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
  5. A Pale Light in the Black by K.B. Wagers

Currently Watching & Reading

Currently Watching:

We watched The Creator this week and it is so incredibly good. AI. Androids. Humanity. An international wars about it all. SO GOOD. It’s definitely intense and worth looking up content warnings for, but I’m so glad we watched it.

Books Up Next:

OKAY. Since I basically never read the books I say I’m going to read, I’m phrasing this section a new way. I’ll be listing one audiobook, one ebook, and one graphic novel/comic I hope to get to this week. Hopefully this works better for me in planning my reads!

  1. Audiobook – Bryony and Roses by T. Kingfisher
  2. Ebook – We Speak Through the Mountain by Premee Mohamed
  3. Graphic Novel – The Banks by Roxane Gay

Recent Purchases

Here are a few ebooks I’ve recently purchased:

  1. Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher – Only $1.99!!
  2. Into the Bargain by Colleen Cowley – $.99 Pre-Order Price
  3. Rose of the Fae by Brittany Fichter – $4.99

Final Thoughts on the Week

For those keeping up with my sick pups from last week, they are all doing much, much better this week! One of the three actually got a completely clear bill of health from the vet! Fingers crossed the other two follow suit soon.

Please share your Sunday Post in the comments below so I can check out your blog and post. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I’ll never forget the huge line at BookExpo for Tamora Pierce. I’m glad that she has a graphic novel now. I bet that will do well.

I agree completely: there’s no time for bad books!

  6. You read an interesting selection of books Hannah. You line up more with Robin on our blog than me. But I loved The Tainted Cup.

  7. It’s so good to hear the pups are doing much better. Have a wonderful week, Hannah ☕📚🪱😊

  8. i also reading the tainted cup and i really liking the murder mystery fantasy concept mixed in with levithans (godzilla) type monsters. I also find the way people have augumented them selves to be able to do things like the secretary does for the main character. Being able to recall everything is quite an interesting thing.

  9. I’m going to be reading The Tainted Cup soon, I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

  10. Congrats on joining your awesome group. That sounds great. I hope you have fun with it and it’s all you want it to be. Have a great week!

Have a wonderful new week. ☀

  13. Glad to hear the pups are doing better and that one got a clean bill of health from the vet! That Strong Women event sounds like it would be neat! Hope you enjoy that. I almost watched The Creator this weekend. Maybe I’ll try to do that this week. Have a great week!

  14. I completely agree with you about DNFing books. There’s so many good ones out there – wasting time on ones that aren’t working for you just makes it so there’s not enough time to read the ones that you will love.

We’ve had unseasonably warm weather yesterday and today. I’m with you, I’d rather have rain than snow. So happy to hear your pups are doing well! I agree about DNFing books you aren’t enjoying! Life is too short. The Tainted Cup looks good. I hope you enjoy it!
