Books That Would Make Great Books (and Vice Versa)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. These are all things I can wholeheartedly get behind.

This week’s topic is “Movies/TV Shows That Would Have Made Amazing Books.” I’ve added to this topic to also include books that would make amazing movies because I just couldn’t help myself.

Below are five books I would love to see made into movies and five movies that would’ve been great books.

Books That Should Be Made Into Movies/Shows

  1. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

The Secret History is one of my very favorite books, and it would make SUCH a good movie. It would need an excellent cast and director, but it would make such an iconic movie if done right.

  1. Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey

Upright Women Wanted is one of my favorite works from Gailey. Rebellious librarians in a near-future American Southwest? It’s amazing and would be so glorious on screen.

  1. Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter completely blew me away. I didn’t expect such a sweet and lovely romance from Brandon Sanderson! He managed to make a book that is both a great fantasy and an adorable friends-to-lovers romance. This would make a beautiful movie, either live-action or animated!

  1. The Sum of All Kisses by Julia Quinn

This is one of those books I’ll rave about whenever I’m given a chance – it really is that good! It’s absolutely hilarious, especially for a historical romance. Given all the Bridgerton love lately, I think movies or TV shows of some of her other books and series would do incredibly well.

  1. None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney

“A psychological thriller about two teenagers teaming up with the FBI to track down juvenile serial killers.” Tell me you wouldn’t watch that if it was a movie or TV show! This would do so well streaming on Netflix or Disney+. None Shall Sleep is such a great book and deserves WAY more hype.

Movies That Would’ve Been Great Books

  1. Knives Out

Knives Out is already similar to so many Agatha Christie novels, so it would make a killer book on its own. If they ever stopped making these movies, a book series following Detective Benoit Blanc would be so fun.

  1. 13 Going on 30

13 Going on 30 may be one of the most iconic romantic comedies ever made. If this had been a book in 2024, it would have been a huge hit!

  1. Inception

I feel like in an alternate world Inception is actually a book instead of a movie. I wish I could experience it as a book, but I’ll settle for having the movie!

  1. Indiana Jones

Okay, so I’m cheating a bit with this one. There technically are Indiana Jones books from quite a while ago and even a novelization of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. But what I would love is a new series of Indiana Jones – new books with new adventures or even following a new character!

  1. The Creator

I enjoyed this recent science fiction film a lot. It’s intense, has a huge emphasis on AI and class, and made me think deeply about humanity. This would have made one glorious tome, and I would have loved every second of it. Go watch this film if you haven’t seen it yet! It’s apparently on Disney+ at the moment.

This is such a fun topic, so I’d love to see your thoughts in the comments!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!

  1. A great list! I nearly put Knives Out on mine then wasn’t sure if it was a book already so left it out 😂

    1. I LOVE Knives Out. It’s definitely inspired by lots of other classic mysteries.

  2. Inception is a great answer.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. Ahh you also had Inception! I almost put Get Out on my list too.

  3. I would be so stoked for a Netflix version of The Secret History. That’s one of my all-time-favorite books.

    1. SAME. I would be so nervous they’d get it wrong though!!

  4. Upright Women Wanted is one of my favorite novellas, and I would love to see it as a TV show. I could really see Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) doing a great job with adapting it and expanding on the universe Sarah Gailey created.

    1. YESSS. That would be amazing. I also love their River of Teeth novella (which would also make an AMAZING show).

  5. I need to watch Knives Out! I keep hearing how great it is, but I’ve never sat down to watch it. Maybe 2024 will be the year!

    1. If you like like classic mysteries like Agatha Christie you should definitely try it!! My dad even loved it and he’s not a fan of quirky movies (like my husband and I are).

  6. If you liked 13 Going On 30, you should read Amy Lea’s Woke Up Like This. Similar type of plot.

    1. oooh just added this to my TBR!

  7. Knives Out would make a great series!!!

    1. I <3 Benoit Blanc. Would totally read books following all his travels and mysteries.
