Top Ten Tuesday: Ten SFF Authors I Discovered in 2023

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. These are all things I can wholeheartedly get behind.

This week’s topic is “New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2023.” I had such a great reading year in 2023 and discovered so many excellent new-to-me authors. The ten authors listed below are all ones I enjoyed, with zero duds in the bunch!

After each of the below authors, I’ve listed the books I read from them in 2023 and also the books I hope to read from them in the future.

  1. Premee Mohamed [Read: And What Can We Offer You Tonight] [Currently Reading: The Annual Migration of Clouds] [On My TBR: The Butcher of the Forest]
  1. Stephen Graham Jones [Read: Night of the Mannequins, Earthdivers, Vol. 1, Earthdivers, Vol. 2] [On My TBR: The Only Good Indians, I Was a Teenage Slasher, My Heart is a Chainsaw]
  1. Charles Soule [Read: The Endless Vessel, Light of the Jedi, Tales of Light and Life] [On My TBR: Anyone, The Oracle Year]
  1. Allison Saft [Read: A Fragile Enchantment] [On My TBR: A Dark and Drowning Tide, Down Comes the Night, A Far Wilder Magic]
  1. P. Djéli Clark [Read: Ring Shout] [On My TBR: The Black God’s Drums, The Dead Cat Tail Assassins
  1. Ray Nayler [Read: The Tusks of Extinction] [On My TBR: The Mountain in the Sea, The Job at the End of the World]
  1. Lina Rather [Read: A Season of Monstrous Conceptions] [On My TBR: Sisters of the Vast Black, American Gothic Short Stories]
  1. Mike Chen [Read: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – The Dog of War] [On My TBR: Here and Now and Then, Brotherhood]
  1. Cavan Scott [Read: Dead Seas, Tempest Runner, Tales of Light and Life, Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor, Vol 1: Weapons of Past Destruction] [On My TBR: Cry of the Innocents]
  1. Izzy Wasserstein [Read: These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart (releasing 3/12/2024 – review coming soon!)] [On My TBR: All the Hometowns You Can’t Stay Away From]

  1. I haven’t read any of these authors or, obviously, any of these books. I often read new-to-me authors but sometimes I don’t even pay attention to the authors. The ten I chose I did.

  2. I hope you continue to enjoy these authors in 2024!

  3. A good mix of books and authors there. I particularly like the look of the Sherlock Holmes one.

    Have a great week!

  4. I’m waiting for my library copy of The Tusks of Extinction.

The rest of these sound good, too!

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  5. Great list! I’ve only read one of Djeli Clark’s novellas and loved it so I need to continue with his Djinn series. Saft is new to me this year and I’m keen to check out more of her work too 🙂

  6. Look at you finding all of these SFF authors! I don’t know that I found one this year. Shame on me!

  7. Star Wars and Sherlock Holmes mysteries!! I’ll definitely have to pick up some of these recommendations, especially as your 2024 reading goals sound fantastic!

  8. I don’t read much SFF, so I haven’t read any of these. I’m glad you enjoyed them, though, and hope you enjoy the ones you’re looking forward to reading.

    Happy TTT!
