Sunday Post: Back Shelf Books 3/10/2024

Welcome back to Back Shelf Books for another Sunday Post!

It definitely feels like Spring is upon us now. It’s cold here, but we’ve been busy preparing for our 2024 garden. This weekend we finally started seeds for our tomatoes and herbs. Next week it’s pepper seeds. We plant tons of tomatoes, as many varieties of basil as I can get my hands on, and about 20 different kinds of peppers. I always forget how much I miss the garden until I finally start digging around in the dirt again.

My Sunday Post this week has a theme. I must have secretly been in a Regency/Victorian mood the past few weeks because there are far more gaslamp fantasies and Regency romances than usual in this post. I think I have finally kicked myself out of the Regency craze, though. I’m just about ready for another gritty reading mood.

As always, I’m linking up with Readerbuzz for The Sunday Salon, Reading Reality for Stacking the Shelves, and The Caffeinated Reviewer for The Sunday Post.

Upcoming Posts & Reviews

I’ve got quite the week planned for next week! I’ll be participating in the Blog Tour for the In the Lives of Puppets paperback release, and I’m thrilled to finally read a Klune novel. Heartbreak Incorporated is a paranormal/supernatural romance that all you PR/UF readers will enjoy. The Last Bloodcarver knocked my socks off and deserves way more hype.

What I Read This Week

It was a bit of a weird reading week for sure. The Last Bloodcarver by Vanessa Le surprised the heck out of me, so I’m super excited to share that review with you all next week.

Currently Reading

I’m part-way through three different books, but they are all quite different. A Vocation of Violence by Kerrigan Byrne is the third book in a dark, Victorian suspense series somewhat about Jack the Ripper and I’ve been anticipating this new book since March of 2022. There is a Rio Grande in Heaven by Ruben Reyes Jr. is a collection of breathtaking short stories centered on Central America, and I can’t wait to finish it. Cascade Failure is a fun sci-fi romp, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far!

Stacking the Shelves

I have a fun stack of books this week! I actually bought a couple of books this week, too. The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager was super cheap, so I was happy to add that one to my Kindle library.

For Review:

A Vocation of Violence by Kerrigan Byrne

Taken to the Grave by Cara Devlin

Haunt Your Heart Out by Amber Roberts

Crave by Maria Llovet

A Darker Mischief by Derek Milman

Purchased:

The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

The Death at Fournier Downs by Cara Devlin (free right now!)

Magic and Miracles: A Multi-Author Anthology ( 99 cent preorder)

Weekly Goal & Final Thoughts

I feel pretty good about where my reading is right now, so I don’t want to jinx myself too much by making a lofty goal. I’m chugging along and reading books that feel good to me. I think I will pick up a grittier sci-fi book soon, but I’m happy living in my world of fantasy books for now.

Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to comment your Sunday post link below 🙂

  1. It’s heading into autumn here. There’s nothing better than tomatoes straight out of the garden. Have a great week!

    1. I LOVE fresh garden tomatoes. Absolutely nothing better. Weirdly enough, my husband doesn’t like fresh tomatoes, so I get them to myself!

  2. We’ve thought spring was arriving twice now, only to be hit by more cold weather each time. But the azaleas are blooming, and our garden is in the ground, so spring cannot be far away.
I love seeing all the books you’ve read and are about to read. I’m scribbling down titles—How to Clean Everything, There is a Rio Grande in Heaven, and more–as fast as I can.

    1. There is a Rio Grande in Heaven is SO GOOD. Lots of really great stories. And How to Clean Everything is an amazing cleaning reference book with excellent advice. I got the ebook on a super sale (like 1.99 I think) and it is absolutely a steal at that price. So jealous of your azaleas! I bet they are gorgeous!

  3. You made me think of spring seeds and starting to grow them for the spring garden. Have a great week.

    1. Starting seeds was such a game-changer for me! Have a good reading week!

  4. Haunt Your Heart Out and A Darker Mischief both look very good! I hope you enjoy In The Lives of Puppets. I love TJ Klune’s books.

    1. I’m so intrigued by A Darker Mischief! I couldn’t pass it up. It says it has dark academia vibes, which sounds super fun.

  5. Haunt Your Heart Out is on my TBR too! We had spring early in the last week, but it dipped back down to winterish weather for us this past week. Hope you have a good week!

    1. I hope Haunt Your Heart Out is a good read! Saving it for when I want a good romance, but it looks super fun.

  6. I really need to do a garden this year. I’m always behind on it and then bail before I actually plant.
I’ve been eying that Catherine de Borough book. Hopefully it was good!
    Have a good week!

    1. This is the first year I don’t feel super behind with the garden! I’m proud of myself this year! I adore the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney series by Claudia Gray and highly recommend it!

  7. Good looking books there. I am on the In The Lives of Puppets Tour on 25 March. It is my second TJ Klune book. I’m enjoying it so far!
I keep my reading goals fairly broad to limit the pressure 😂
    Have a great week ahead!

    1. YAY! Excited to see you on the tour too! Will stop by on your tour day! I’m on March 15th.

  8. The garden is a big change since I moved to North Carolina. It doesn’t totally freeze for long so cool crops can be grown all winter. I’ve planted another round of them in February. I won’t plant the tomato, peppers, basil and maybe green beans until April or May. Basil is something we love but it needs warm weather. But we love the cool crop veggies so we have something year round.

    1. Basil is just about the only herb that grows well for me with how hot it is here. I grow so many varieties and use them in place of all the other herbs. It’s weird, but works for us! I *wish* I could grow cilantro or dill but, alas, they hate me and my microclimate.

  9. I’m moving this summer so I can’t do my garden this year or I wouldn’t be living there for the harvest. I’d normally be starting my tomatoes right now too. Next year.

    1. I had to do a super small (almost nonexistent) garden last year so I totally get it. I’m happy to have a full garden year back! Hopefully next year is a good one for you!

  10. So many of the book covers you posted just pop! I love the Regency ones, but the one that really stood out was Cursed Cruise. It looks so deliciously creepy. I’m also really curious to read the Klune book, it looks really good!

    1. Cursed Cruise is such a fun one! And SUCH a great cover. That artist deserves all the awards.

  11. Oh, gardening has always been a dream of mine. Hope you have a great reading week.

    1. It was my dream for so long, too!! Have a great week!

  12. I would love to get to grips with the garden this year – having been ill for so long, it’s now more like a jungle! I agree that garden-grown tomatoes taste delicious – far better than anything you can buy in the shops:)). Have a lovely week, Hannah.
