The Sunday Post: Reviewing the Week and Looking Ahead – 3/3/2024

Welcome back to Back Shelf Books for another Sunday Post!

I need your help this week! Every Saturday I post reviews for backlist books – I call them Back Shelf Reviews. This week, I don’t have one planned yet. With the rest of my blog week mostly scheduled, I want a good backlist book to read and review. So, I need your recommendations! The only requirement is that the book be at least one year past its publication date. It can be any genre and from any author. Let me know your ideas in the comments!

As always, I’m linking up with Readerbuzz for The Sunday Salon, Reading Reality for Stacking the Shelves, and The Caffeinated Reviewer for The Sunday Post.

Upcoming Posts & Reviews

I have quite the spread of reviews coming up this week! Into the Bargain is a historical fantasy indie book and Cursed Cruise is a YA horror. Ghostlore and Cat Fight are both collected volumes of comics, but they are wildly different.

What I Read This Week

Okay, this list looks massive. What it amounts to in reality is 2 books I was nearly finished with before the week started, 4 graphic novels, 1 audiobook, and one novella.

Currently Reading

I’m currently listening to The Last Bloodcarver by Vanessa Le on audio, and I’m really enjoying it so far. Island Rule by Katie M. Flynn is up next for me on my kindle. Both of these are ARCs from the publishers, so a huge thanks to Macmillan Audio and Gallery.

Stacking the Shelves

This week’s stack has a fun and action-packed vibe. I’m already reading The Last Bloodcarver and it’s great so far. The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh is one of my most anticipated books of the year, so I am thrilled to add it to my kindle!

For Review:

The Last Bloodcarver by Vanessa Le

Cascade Failure by L.M. Sagas

Moonstorm by Yoon Ha Lee

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh by Claudia Gray

In Universes by Emet North

Scoop by Richard Ashley Hamilton

The Black Girl Survives in This One (anthology)

In the Lives of Puppets by T.J. Klune

Purchased:

The Rose Gate by Hanna Sandvig

Weekly Goal & Final Thoughts

February had me a bit overwhelmed, so I’d like to focus on more relaxed reads this week. Also, I’d like to just keep a good pace with my reading and savor the books I read.

Thanks for stopping by! Please let me know any ideas you have for my Back Shelf Saturday read in the comments below. Feel free to also post your Sunday post link 🙂

  1. Since you’ve just read Sea of Tranquility, I’m going to suggest The Glass Hotel. I actually liked that one better, though Sea of Tranquility was also great. Station Eleven is one of my all-time favourite novels.
    Have a great week!

  2. Moonstorm looks interesting. Must look for it. Happy reading week.

  3. I really need to get to several of the books you’ve added to your shelves this week — Moonstorm, Cascade Failure, In the Lives of Puppets… Here’s hoping we both love them all!

  4. Looks like you had a successful reading week. Lots of interesting looking books. I’ve stacked my shelves with In The Lives of Puppets which I am looking forward to reading.

Have a great week next week!

  5. i joined a backlist challegne and there some prompots in that challenge that helps with me selecting backlist books off my sheleves. One is a debut book from 2023 so for that one i have night birds, another one is a someting involving a ship so i picked the bone ships series. some other prompts are neon cover, hotel mansion or castle, and a popular throw back. Good luck

  6. Well I’m going to suggest more White Trash Zombies since I’m enjoying them so much. I got the impression you were one behind? Or maybe Gallant by VE Schwab which is relatively short and is one of the COYER book club picks.

Anne – Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post

  7. That cover of Cursed Cruise is just awesome! I always recommend Jodi Taylor’s Chronicles of St. Mary’s to everyone. It has time travel and history. The first book is Just One Damned Thing After Another. They aren’t standalones so reading them in order is important.

  8. Oops this upcoming week will be relaxing for you.

  9. I would randomly choose something from my shelf to highlight.

You certainly did well with your reading this week!

  10. Why not read a REALLY old classic like a novel by Jane Austen in the original, not a rehash? I love to reread her six novels every few years.

    1. LOVE this! I should probably pick up both Northanger Abbey and P&P again before I read Claudia Gray’s new Tilney/Darcy mystery. Thanks for the idea!

  11. If you enjoy thrillers / mysteries, DAISY DARKER by Alice Feeney is a good one. I also recommend THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY by Matt Haig and ANXIOUS PEOPLE by Fredrik Backman. Good luck choosing! 😀

    1. oooh The Midnight Library has been on my TBR for ages! Great recommendation! I haven’t heard of Daisy Darker, but a thriller might just be perfect for this week. And I for sure need to look more into Anxious People. The name having “anxious” in it has put me off in the past. lolol

  12. Hmm have you read Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series? I think it might appeal to you based on your reading. The first one is called Souless.

Wishing you a happy reading week

    1. I haven’t read them! Definitely adding to my Back Shelf tbr!! Thank you!!

  13. If you are looking for a fast, slightly creepy but also funny fantasy read – Jonathan Stroud’s Lockwood & Co series is huge fun. The first book is called The Screaming Staircase. Have a great week, Hannah:).

    1. oooooh I haven’t heard of this one before! Definitely adding to my Back Shelf TBR! Thanks so much!!

      1. They have also done a TV series which is actually quite good – but it misses the dry humour of the main protagonist, so I prefer the books.

  14. Literary Feline Avatar

I have loved everything I’ve read by Emily St. John Mandel. I haven’t read Sea of Tranquility yet though.

I second Jenni Elyse’s recommendation of Anxious People. Don’t let the word “anxious” in Anxious People put you off. It really is a heartwarming read.

    Have a great week!

    1. Y’all have me convinced! Going to add Anxious People to my Libby list!

  15. Below the Stairs Mysteries would a good back title…they are by Jennifer Ashley.

    1. I love Jennifer Ashley’s writing! I haven’t read past the first book in the series (a fatal flaw of mine when it comes to series) but I really enjoyed the first one! I need to be on the lookout for the second book.
