The Sunday Post: Reviewing the Week and Looking Ahead – 2/18/2024

Welcome back to Back Shelf Books for another Sunday Post!

I’m super excited for today because this week starts the new color palette on the blog! I love the new retro color scheme and feel like it fits my overall vibe and new logo much better.

It’s been a weird week in my neck of the woods – one of those weeks where I had to think about what we even did. I asked my husband and he was like, “We went to the vet on Valentine’s Day.” OH, YEAH. The struggles of being a dog owner. Never fear, though! We made up for Valentine’s Day with a lovely sushi lunch today!

Per usual, I’m linking up with Deb at Readerbuzz for The Sunday Salon, Marlene at Reading Reality for Stacking the Shelves, and Kimberly at The Caffeinated Reviewer for The Sunday Post.

Upcoming Posts & Reviews

I’ll for sure have reviews up next week for The Warm Hands of Ghosts, The Baker and the Bard, and Friday, Book One: The First Day of Christmas. The rest of the week is still a little up in the air since I have a ton of reviews to write!

What I Read This Week

I had a BIG week of reading. I had a longish car ride with family this week, which is my favorite time to read graphic novels. Because of that, I was able to get a lot of graphic novel ARCs finished.

Currently Reading

I’m not in the middle of any books at the moment! I do have reviews to write, though. I’ll probably pick up some audiobooks this week to listen to while I’m writing. The next ebook I’ll reach for will probably either be The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard or Island Rule by Katie M. Flynn.

Stacking the Shelves

It’s a small to medium-sized stack this week (with genres all over the place)!

For Review:

The Night Guest by Hildur Knutsdottir

King of Dead Things by Nevin Holness

In the Garden Behind the Moon by Alexandra A. Chan

Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson

Finding Echoes by Foz Meadows

Loving Safoa by Liza Wemakor

Weekly Goal & Final Thoughts

My goal for this week is to get a lot of reviews and blog posts finished! At the same time, I don’t want to spend too much time obsessing about getting the reviews perfect.

Do you spend more time on reviews for books you like or books you dislike? I definitely spend more time reviewing books I like.

Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to drop your Sunday Post link in the comments below!

  2. I totally judged The Butcher of the Forest by its cover and went over to read your review. It sounds really good!

  3. Ooh, The Baker and the Bard catches my eye. Love cosy fantasy. I’ll have to keep an eye out for your review!

    My STS/weekly roundup.

    1. Ahh you’ll love it then! Have a good week!

  4. I’m hoping to start The Warm Hands of Ghosts soon, I’ve heard really good things about it. And I will need to read your review of The Butcher of the Forest, I loved it too. Have a good week!

    1. I loved The Warm Hands of Ghosts, but it’s a different sort of read for me. It was my first Katherine Arden read, so I had no idea what to expect!

  5. I have to review a book straight after reading it otherwise I worry that I will get books mixed up 😂 I find that books that I enjoy are easier to write reviews about. I do struggle writing reviews for shorter books whether I enjoyed them or not 🤔

I hope that you enjoy all your new books. I’ve not read a graphic novel before.

    Have a great week ahead!

    1. Shorter books are so hard to review!! I never want to give too much away!

      1. Yeah. It is tough!

  6. You did have a nice reading week. I am reading LOVE/Library books for the COYER RAT. But I’m trying to choose Love ARCs also so I stay a bit ahead. If I’m not ahead I can’t read anything but the ARCs planned for the week! Hope to see you on the WTZ chat.

    1. I missed reading the WTZ second book! 🙁 I’m hoping to catch up by the third one!

  7. What an impressive range of books:)). I’ve read Scalzi’s The Dispatcher and thoroughly enjoyed it, too. I love the look of Butcher of the Forest. As for reviewing – I don’t bother to finish books I dislike as Life is too short so I only ever review books I like. Have a great week!

    1. Yes!! I always say Life is too short to read bad books! I was thinking more about three star books. Ones you’re kinda meh about.

      1. I’d always rather gush and fangirl over a book that I love than list my issues with a meh offering:)).

  8. Your book list looks like mine. Last month I played catch up on reviews. Had to do some batch reviews this week, but I am finally back on track.

  9. Unfortunately I can’t read in the car, I get motion sickness.
I find average reads take the longest to review because it’s harder to stop it sounding generic.

Wishing you a great reading week

  10. You certainly did get a lot of graphic novels read. The Baker and the Bard sounds especially compelling to me.

Good luck with your review writing.

  11. I’m glad you got a makeup lunch! Hope you’re having a great week.
